Adipose Tissue

Adipose tissue (fat tissue) apart from acting as a storage site of energy, it is also an endocrine gland which plays an active role in energy homeostasis by secreting adipokines that control feeding, thermogenesis, immunity and neuroendocrine function. Obesity is associated with high blood glucose, high blood pressure, high triglyceride level, high LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and low HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol), collectively known as metabolic syndrome. Excessive adipose tissue will also accumulate in visceral organ, hence increase the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events.
